WINTER PARK — When tourists think of Central Florida, they probably imagine huge theme parks or nearby beaches, both among the region’s most popular attractions.
But what about another aspect of this region that brought tourists to the Sunshine State long before the theme parks arrived: Natural Florida.
From lakes and wetlands to historic preserves, Florida has been an inviting place for its natural beauty and well-preserved and scenic spots outside of large urban areas. One of those urban areas, the city of Winter Park, is putting the spotlight on the state’s appealing natural enclaves through an art exhibit at the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens.
That seems an appropriate choice, since the Polasek Museum is known for its own picturesque spot: the museum is on 3 acres of land overlooking the beauty of Lake Osceola.
What is the Polasek Museum’s Exhibit on Natural Florida?
On Tuesday, Aug. 27, the Polasek Museum unveiled its latest exhibition, “Natural Florida: Art by Emma Sears Marsh and Joy Postle,” which runs now through Dec. 1, 2024. It celebrates the state’s rich and beautiful rural landscape, which get put on vivid display through Postle and Marsh’s artwork.
“This exhibit features stunning botanical watercolors and vibrant oil paintings that bring to life the rich flora and fauna of early 20th-century Florida,” the museum noted.
This exhibit is divided into two sections: Botanical Watercolors by Marsh and Oil Paintings depicting Florida’s diverse wildlife by Postle. Throughout the run of this exhibit, there will be special programming that includes:
• Tallamy’s Homegrown National Park: A presentation by Deborah Green.
• Gallery Walk & Talk: Join Catherine Bowman for an enlightening tour.
• Edible Natives for Your Landscape: A workshop with Stacey Matrazzo.
• Family Day for all ages.
“Explore the breathtaking landscapes that inspired these pioneering artists and learn how we can contribute to preserving Florida’s native biodiversity,” the museum noted.
While Florida is well known for Disney or the Miami nightlife, Florida has also long been known as a paradise for outdoor lovers, particularly in the winter months when the weather seems picture-perfect.
In addition to the beaches and coastlines, Florida is renowned for its clear freshwater springs, swamps filled with wildlife, cypress forests, and historic small towns. There are plenty of natural, outdoor, beautiful spots the state has to offer those who don’t like long lines at theme parks.
Where Can I see The Natural Florida Exhibit?
The Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens is located at 633 Osceola Ave. in Winter Park, close to Rollins College. The Polasek is a historic site on three acres overlooking Lake Osceola. On May 2, 2000, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
