Ex-patrol officer.
School resource officer.
Volunteer with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Florida.
That kind of resume and background made his arrest on Tuesday all the more surprising, particularly since the suspect is now facing 10 counts of possession of child pornography.
Robert Kevin Britt, 38, of Davenport, was taken into custody on Tuesday, and interviewed by detectives from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
“Based on his statements and the evidence discovered during the investigation, he was arrested and booked into the Osceola County Jail,” noted Twis Lizasuain, public information officer for the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, in her report on the arrest.
This was part of a joint investigation between two neighboring county law enforcement agencies. It started when Polk County Sheriff’s detectives were conducting an undercover Internet sting operation targeting people who transmit child pornography through the Web.
It was through that sting operation that Polk detectives identified Britt as a suspect. Detectives say he was using the Internet to traffic or distribute child pornography images.
Polk detectives contacted the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office when they learned that Britt lived across the county line. In the Four Corners area, Davenport makes up parts of unincorporated Polk and Osceola counties.
Osceola County detectives picked up the investigation, and got a search warrant for Britt’s home.
While at the house, Osceola detectives “seized several computers and electronic devices that were located in Britt’s bedroom,” Lizasuain noted. “Detectives processed the devices and found at least 10 child pornography images.”
Britt was arrested, and Lizasuain said detectives also looked into his background and learned that Britt had formerly worked for the Pensacola Police Department as a school resource officer, and also as a patrol officer.
He was also affiliated with the Explorer Program, which brings together law enforcement officers and teens. Law Enforcement Career Exploring is open to young men and women ages 14 to 20 who have an interest in learning more about careers in the field of law enforcement.
Law Enforcement Exploring also provides educational training programs for teens, and the program’s primary goal is to help young adults choose a career path within law enforcement.
Britt has also been a volunteer for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Florida.
Lizasuain said so far there’s no indication that any of the pornographic images that Britt had on his computer were in any way related to his work with Big Brothers or the teens he knew there.
“Detectives made contact with the organization, and at this time, do not have evidence any of the child images are related to that agency,” Lizasuain noted.
