The body found in the vehicle has been identified as 37-year-old Damien Dominique Rahim of 8040 Firenze Boulevard in Orlando.
Rahim has performed locally, including at CityWalk, as a reggae/hip-hop artist who also goes by the name Khamelien.
On Sunday night, homicide detectives got a warrant for the arrest of Calvin Deon Jones, 26, of 157 Evergreen Drive in Lake Wales. If detectives find Jones, he is expected to be charged with felony murder and armed robbery in the death of Rahim.
“Jones was positively identified as the suspect in Rahim’s murder,” noted Carrie Eleazer, the public information officer for the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, who said Jones was at the same motel the victim was found at.
What’s known so far, according to the sheriff’s office, is that the victim was discovered sometime Saturday evening. Deputies got a call around 9:20 p.m. that a man had been found dead in a car parked at the Days Inn Motel at 2425 Frontage Road off U.S. 27 North in Davenport.
“When deputies arrived, they found Rahim deceased inside his car, the apparent victim of a homicide,” reported Eleazer.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office released to the media a compilation of several different shots taken from the Days Inn video surveillance cameras, which captured images of a car as it maneuvered through the parking lot.
It shows what a vehicle entering the parking lot of the motel, then circling it, before finding a parking spot. This car may have been the one Jones was driving in, detectives say.
The actual time frame of this video was from 9:08 p.m. to 9:18 p.m.
Following the initial investigation, detectives determined that Jones “was at the motel at the same time as the suspect vehicle shown in the video surveillance we sent out,” Eleazer said.
Rahim was found dead in his own vehicle, not the vehicle shown in that video, Eleazer said.
“There are two separate cars,” she said. “We did not sent out any photos or videos of Rahim’s car.”
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office noted that Jones has a criminal history, which includes being taken into custody by the Lake Wales Police Department in December 2003 for resisting arrest and then again in February 2006 for possession of marijuana and forgery; by the Haines City Police Department in August 2004 for driving with a suspended license; and by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in November 2007 for failing to register a motor vehicle.
He spent three years in a state prison, the DeSoto Annex in Arcadia, after being convicted of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was released in March 2011.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said Jones is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 165 pounds.
