The Orlando Lions scored a 3-1 victory over Colorado on Tuesday at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

ORLANDO – At the very start, there was a white sheet being waved from the stands inside the Florida Citrus Bowl, but in this case it was hardly a symbolic waving of the white flag.
Defeat, to be sure, was not what the fans had in mind when they raised the flag that contained the image of none other than the Star Trek character Mr. Spock, and below it, one simple word: Logical.
What was perfectly logical to those fans, of course, was their devotion to Orlando City Soccer Club. On Tuesday evening, the city’s soccer team rewarded that faith by defeating the visiting Colorado Rapids in what had been a highly anticipated match. This marked the third round of U.S. Open Cup play at Fifth Third Bank Field at the Citrus Bowl.
“At the end of the game, the score is 1 for the Rapids, and three for your Orlando Lions,” the announcer broadcast over the loudspeaker to the crowd, which cheered its hearty approval.
As the fans waved purple “Iron Lion” flags to show their support, the Orlando Lions proved to be in good form early on, scoring its first goal within the first four minutes of the game, when 24-year-old keeper Bryan Burke demonstrated his skills at a good swift kick. It would take another 12 minutes before the next goal was scored, this time by Colorado. Continue reading

ORLANDO — Ever since he was a kid, Bryan Burke has known he had a passion for soccer.
“I’ve been playing it all my life,” Burke said.
It’s only been more recently, though, that Burke has developed a passion for something else: the city of Orlando.
“I’ve only been there once,” he said. “I hear good things about it, that it’s an awesome place to live.”
Burke is about to find out quite a bit more about Orlando, since the resident of Newport Beach, Calif., is moving here permanently on Jan. 24. He’s about to start a new chapter in his career, since the City Beautiful’s own soccer team, the Orlando City Lions, just signed Defender Burke to the pro team roster. In joining the Lions, Burke will wear No. 7 for the team.
“I’m really excited about it,” Burke told Freeline Media. “I’m planning on getting there on January 24. I’ve only been to Orlando once, but it was an awesome experience.”
That experience put Burke, 24, on the opposite side of the Lions, when he was a part of the LA Blues last season, leading the team in minutes played — 1,867 altogether. Having played against the Lions here in Orlando, Burke said he instantly knew he wanted to join the team if an opportunity opened up — and it did. Continue reading

ORLANDO – On Tuesday, Orlando kicked off the new year by hosting the Capital One Bowl game at the Florida Citrus Bowl stadium, attracting a crowd of more than 62,000 people to watch the Georgia Bulldogs overcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 45-31 that took the game into overtime.
That could be the last time that local football fans watch a game at the Citrus Bowl – at least in its current stae, anyway.
The stadium that seats 70,000 people is gearing up now for a major reconstruction project that will bring down the old to make way for the new. On Wednesday, the City of Orlando, which owns the Florida Citrus Bowl, added a stadium “reconstruction procurement process” to its website, asking for bids for the redesign and reconstruction of a stadium that dates back to 1936, when it had a capacity of just 8,900 seats.
The city is also looking to hire a program manager to assist on this reconstruction project. Continue reading
