Alpha Male Ryan: Gunfight in a movie theater.

Movie theaters now warn about illegally taping or recording a movie while watching it. But what’s being done about the risk of violence inside the theater, like the mass shooting in Colorado? Alpha Male Ryan says he knows of a good solution. (Photo by Michael Freeman).

Editor’s Note: On July 20, there was a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight screening of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises.” A gunman, later arrested and identified as James Eagan Holmes, entered the movie theater dressed in tactical clothing, then set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others.
Alpha Male Ryan says there’s a way to stop senseless violence in public places: arming the people who might otherwise become the victims of this kind of assault.

Let’s say I’m at a midnight movie theater with my girlfriend and our son.
First of all, I’m going to sit somewhere near the exit, so I can quickly get out of there if I need to. I always sit near the exit doorway just in case something happens.
From there I can see anybody coming from the front entrance tunnel — and I can analyze them. That’s what I do.
I’m going to notice if someone has a gun, and that’s even with concealment.
A couple of weeks ago, I was at a restaurant for lunch. A guy walked in and I told my girlfriend, “He’s got a gun on him.” I knew he had a gun because of a bulge on his waistline. When he got up to leave, he walked by us and he had a badge on that said “Chief of Police-retired” on it. So he definitely had a gun on him.
If I had been at the movie theater in Aurora, I’m pretty sure I would have seen the motion of this guy opening the door and coming in there. First things first, I would have told my girlfriend to get down, and told the people around me to get down. Then I would have rushed up the aisle and probably would have told my girlfriend to jump over the railing.
He might have gotten off a few shots, but as soon as his eyes were looking the other way, I would have rushed him. Or I would have waited until he reloaded, and then rushed him.
But I wouldn’t have allowed him to kill all those people. I wait until he’s not looking at me, and then I flank him from the perifery — outside of his line of sight. I would come in real quick and quiet when he’s not looking at me, and if he sees me after seven yards, it doesn’t matter — he’s already dead.
I would have had a knife on me. I would have rushed to the front of the theater and pulled my knife and shanked him in the throat. I would have just kept cutting him in the throat until the blood stopped spraying on me.
How do you stop this violence? You figure if you had more trained citizens out there, trained in the use of firearms, he will be stopped a lot sooner by a citizens response.
If you require the same training at a civilian-based level as a law enforcement or military level, there’s no reason they can’t act out a citizens arrest.
What I want to know is, what happened that night? Anybody can tackle a man with their body. The fact of the matter is, nobody charged him. There wasn’t one person in there with military training or security training or martial arts training?
Look, I know it’s scary — I know this. But I would have done it.
If I had been there that night and I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have had a clean conscience otherwise.
